Outdoor Education Safety Management - Lands Edge Illawarra

Land’s Edge Illawarra - Recreational Activities for School

Snorkel Adventure
Snorkelling provides us with a window to the sea. It enables us to see first hand the wonders, biodiversity and mysteries of life beneath the waves. Students will gain greater confidence in the water, and enjoy learning a new skill.
Participants do not need to have had any snorkelling or ocean swimming experience. All sessions commence in the safety of a sheltered bay or rock pool, then graduate to a safe harbour or bay. Marvel at the weird and wonderful animals beneath the surface.

Canoe Escapade
Depending on your schedule you can choose between two of our local tidal rivers – Crooked River, Gerroa or Minnamurra River, Kiama; in Canadian canoes. Students have great fun exploring the estuaries and mangrove swamps that are vital to the health of our beaches. Land’s Edge instructors teach the basic strokes and safety aspects of canoeing which enables all participants to paddle confidently along these fascinating waterways. Canoeing is a great mode of transport and enables us to explore areas that we wouldn’t be able to visit by foot. Enjoy the tranquility and observe wading birds, fish and other animals which make their home along the river.

Rock Platform Ramble
Students love to wander along the rock platforms at low tide to find some of the fascinating creatures that live in this harsh environment. These areas are home to a myriad of plant and animal life. Tickle a sea anemone or watch a killer snail in action.

The Land’s Edge staff conducts safe, fun and informative rambles along the platforms, helping participants to observe, identity and understand some of these intriguing species, their living conditions and adaptations.

Kids Beach Art and Games
Designed for Primary students this session’s focus is kids having a fun, safe and educational beach experience. Land’s Edge staff have an endless repertoire of games which focus on the marine environment.
Sand sculptures, stories, drawing, games, fun and much more keep the children busy throughout the session. But all the while, without knowing it, they will learn about the flora and fauna living on the beach, beneath the waves and on the rocky platforms.

Surf Awareness/Surf Lesson
Surf awareness and beach safety is something every Australian student should have access to! These fun and informative sessions combine surf awareness with a beginner surf lesson. The first part of the session covers general beach hazards - what they are, how to recognise them and what to do if you get into ‘trouble’.
The second part is a beginner surf lesson covering basic surfing techniques and safety issues. It is conducted by the Land’s Edge Surf School and wetsuits and soft Malibu boards are used.
Surf Awareness/Surf Lesson is a great water confidence activity in which students love to take part!

Bush / Coastal Walks
Land’s Edge has some fantastic full-day and half-day walks in which students can take part. The walks cover a range of topics including flora and fauna adaptations and navigation - or they can simply be for fun and exercise. Locations are varied and can include ancient rainforests or stunning coastal views.
