To explore the diversity of environments that exist along the south coast of New South Wales |

Within this exploration promote a deeper understanding of the differing environments, assisting with curriculum based learning |

To encourage participation in activities where students have the opportunity to:
- View the coastal environment from different perspectives for example; geographical, biological, adventurous and aesthetical
- Increase water confidence
- Develop environmental awareness
- Act as a stimulant for further exploration of the coastal environment |

To understand the fundamental technical and safety considerations when;
- going on an overnight bushwalk
- recreating in coastal environments (surfing, walking and canoeing) |

At times create an atmosphere for reflection allowing students to investigate their place in the group, school, family and society as a whole. |
Student Outcomes – Curriculum Based
Through flexible curriculum based sessions students will have the opportunity to study the following environments:

Student Outcomes – Aesthetics/Personal Growth/Community
Through the application of the Land’s Edge Philosophy, innovative programming and completion of a booklet/journal, students will have the opportunity to draw upon the following Aesthetic/Personal Growth Outcomes/Community:

Details concerning the booklet/journal are as follows:
• The booklet/ journal will contain a selection of readings, thought provoking philosophical questions and curriculum based tasks for the students to complete.
• This material will be developed in conjunction with the school in order for the students to cover areas of school community relevance.
• Certain areas will encourage student sketches, ideas or own writings, song lyrics or poetry etc.
Content:
Students will be split into appropriately sized groups and participate in sessions on a round robin basis. Each group will be assigned a Group Leader that will help and guide the students through the whole Program. For relevant parts of the Program, a specialised Activity Guide will be responsible for running the activities.

Day One - Rainforest to the Sea: Students spend the day following the Minnamurra River, from where it flows off the escarpment into a rainforest ecosystem. The first section is spent walking along the boardwalk and viewing the magnificent falls of the Minnamurra National Park. The second part of the day sees the students have an introductory canoe session and paddle the remaining kilometres of the river (now in an estuarine mangrove forest) to where the river meets the South Pacific Ocean.

Day Two & Three - Bush Camp: These two days are designed as an introductory into lightweight camping. Students will spend the morning planning and organising their hike, then once all the preparation is completed walk out to the selected campsite in the stunning Jamberoo Valley. After spending the night in their tents and following breakfast, pack up then return in the afternoon. Topics covered include:– What to pack on an overnight hike
– How to pack a back pack
– Food and nutrition requirements
– How to pitch a tent and select a suitable site
– Cooking skills and safety issues when cooking in the bush
– Basic Navigation
– Social & personal issues arising from moving and living in a small group

Day Four - Beach Day: Students spend the day at Seven Mile Beach, the best beach to learn surfing skills in NSW! They will participate in a Surf Awareness Session followed by an Introductory Surf Lesson. Surf Awareness is an essential knowledge base for any Australian and surfing is a fantastic way for people to interact and learn about this environment. Topics covered include:- Rip identification and steps to avoid them
- Different wave types
- How the weather effects beach conditions and therefore safety
- Basic surf safety
- Basic surfing skills
Throughout the day students will also have the opportunity to investigate the dune systems, identify some of the vegetations and their role in stabilising this environment.
